The Somerset village of Stanton Drew lies within the Chew Valley just north of the Mendip Hills. It is located just 8 miles south of Bristol and can trace its history back to prehistoric times. Even today the Stanton Drew stones are a spectacle which can only be bettered by Avebury. In the mid-1800s the village held its own race meetings, although most were very minor affairs, but an exciting steeplechase did take place on Tuesday 6th May 1851 across 3 ½ miles of good hunting ground on the edge of the village. The race was won by Mr Morris’s bay horse Horn of Chase, the 3/1 second favourite, getting the better of Cliftonian and Miss Talbot. There are no records of later meetings taking place in the village. |
